Cats are famous for their cleanliness — they spend hours every day grooming their fur and keeping themselves tidy. But even though most cats handle the basics on their own, you can do a lot to help them stay healthy, clean, and comfortable. Here’s a guide to supporting your cat’s hygiene — from coat care to dental health and nail trimming.

Nature’s Own Groomer

A healthy cat typically spends several hours a day licking its fur. This helps remove dirt, spread natural oils, and keep the coat shiny. However, some cats need extra help — especially long-haired breeds, older cats, overweight cats, or those with health issues that make grooming difficult.

As an owner, it’s important to notice if your cat stops grooming itself. A sudden change in grooming habits can be a sign of pain, illness, or stress and should be checked by a veterinarian.

Brushing – The Best Daily Support

Regular brushing is the most effective way to help your cat stay clean. It removes loose hair, prevents mats, and reduces the amount of fur your cat swallows while grooming.

  • Short-haired cats usually only need a quick brushing a few times a week.
  • Long-haired cats should be brushed daily to prevent tangles, especially around the hindquarters and belly.
  • Use a brush or comb suited to your cat’s coat type, and keep sessions short and calm to make it a positive experience.

Brushing isn’t just practical — it’s also a great way to bond with your cat. Many cats enjoy the gentle attention when it’s done patiently.

Baths – Only When Necessary

Most cats don’t need baths, since they do a good job cleaning themselves. But sometimes a bath is unavoidable — for example, if your cat gets into something sticky, oily, or toxic.

Always use cat-safe shampoo and lukewarm water. Avoid getting water in the ears, and dry your cat thoroughly with a towel afterward. Some cats find baths stressful, so stay calm and speak softly throughout the process.

If your cat truly hates water, you can use waterless shampoo or cat-safe grooming wipes as a gentler alternative.

Ears, Eyes, and Paws – The Overlooked Details

While the coat gets most of the attention, other areas also need regular care:

  • Ears: Check for dirt, wax, or redness. Use a damp cotton pad or a cat ear cleaner — never cotton swabs.
  • Eyes: Gently wipe away any discharge with a soft cloth. Persistent irritation should be checked by your vet.
  • Paws and claws: Make sure there’s no debris between the paw pads. Trim the claws if they get too long — especially for indoor cats that don’t wear them down naturally.

These small routines can prevent infections and discomfort, and they help you spot problems early.

Dental Care – The Forgotten Part of Cleanliness

Many cat owners overlook dental hygiene, but it’s an important part of keeping your cat clean and healthy. Plaque and gum disease are common and can cause pain and bad breath.

You can prevent many issues by brushing your cat’s teeth a few times a week with a soft brush and toothpaste made for cats. There are also dental treats and special diets that help reduce plaque buildup.

If your cat starts drooling, pawing at its mouth, or having trouble eating, schedule a dental checkup with your vet.

When Your Cat Gets Older

Older cats may struggle to keep themselves clean because of stiffness or arthritis. You can help by brushing more often, checking the fur around the rear end, and making sure the litter box is easy to access.

A soft bed and a litter box with low sides can make a big difference for a senior cat who might otherwise have trouble staying clean.

A Clean Cat Is a Happy Cat

Helping your cat stay clean isn’t just about appearance — it’s about well-being. A well-groomed cat feels more comfortable, avoids skin problems, and enjoys a closer bond with its owner.

With a little patience and regular care, you can keep your cat healthy, beautiful, and content — no matter its age or coat type.
